About these images

Before cameras were invented in the early decades of the nineteenth century, images were recorded using sketches made with charcoal, graphite or similar materials. These sketches are often the only way, beyond the written record, of understanding how people lived in the early colonial period. Below are some images which depict the lives of some of the early inhabitants of St. John’s Island, now Prince Edward Island, as well as modern photos of their built heritages which are being restored and protected.
